NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt quarterback Kyle Shurmur and linebacker Charles Wright have been recognized by the Maxwell Football Club’s national selection committee as the organization announced a pair of preseason watch lists on Monday.
Shurmur, a senior from Philadelphia, Pa., has been named to the 2018 Maxwell Award Watch List while Wright, a redshirt senior from Irvine, Calif., has been recognized as part of the 2018 Bednarik Award Watch List.
The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the nation’s top player as judged by a panel of sportscasters, sportswriters, NCAA head coaches and the membership of the Maxwell Football Club. The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented annually since 1995 to the nation’s top defensive player as judged by the Maxwell Football Club.
Shurmur ranks among Vandy’s all-time passing leaders and enters his final season within reach of several team records. In 2017, Shurmur set a team record with 26 touchdown passes and threw for 2,823 yards, the third highest single-season total in VU history.
Wright enjoyed an All-Southeastern Conference caliber campaign in his first year as a regular starter on the defense in 2017. The three-year letterman topped the Dores – and shared league lead – with nine quarterback sacks, matching the second highest total by a Commodore since the 1980s.
The Commodores kick off the season against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m. from Vanderbilt Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now by calling 615-322-GOLD, visiting vucommodores.com, or visiting the McGugin Center Ticket Office.
