Former Vanderbilt Commodores on Active NFL Rosters

With all 32 of the NFL teams recently making their roster cuts from 90 players down to 53, we now have a better idea of which former Vanderbilt Commodores will be continuing to play this season.

The Veterans:

Adam Butler (DL, New England Patriots) is a former undrafted free agent from the 2017 Draft. He posted 19 tackles and 2 sacks last season and was able to hang on to his spot with the Patriots.

Zach Cunningham (LB, Houston Texans) is a former 2nd round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. After posting a 90 tackle season, he is primed to continue to play a big role on the highly praised Texans defense.

Andre Hal (DB, Houston Texans) had a great start to his career after being drafted in the 7th round of the 2014 Draft. In 61 games, he has compiled 122 tackles, 9 INT’s, 26 passes defensed, and a sack. However, his promising career was put on hold after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Casey Hayward (DB, LA Chargers) has had a great career in the NFL since being drafted in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft. He has been voted into the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons after having a 7 interception season in 2016.

Stephen Weatherly (DL, Minnesota Vikings) is heading into his 3rd season in the NFL after being drafted in the 7th round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite having played 2 seasons with the Vikings, he has played very limited snaps and has just been used as depth.

The Rookies:

Oren Burks (LB, Green Bay Packers) was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The former Commodore is expected to play a large role in the Packers’ defense after veteran LB Jake Ryan tore his ACL.

Tre Herndon (DB, Jacksonville Jaguars) was an UDFA in the 2018 NFL Draft. He beat out Quenton Meeks for the final cornerback spot on the Jags roster.

Trent Sherfield (WR, Arizona Cardinals) was an UDFA in the 2018 NFL Draft. After putting up 50 receptions for 729 yards and 5 TD’s his senior year at Vandy, he was able to make the Cardinals roster.

The Notable Cuts:

Will Holden (OL, N/A) was a 5th round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cardinals. He started 5 games his rookie season, which makes his release surprising for many. He has a chance to get on with a team again as a free agent.

Wesley Johnson (OL, N/A) was a 4th round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since being drafted, he has bounced around the league playing for the Steelers and NY Jets. After an unsuccessful series of starts at center for the Jets last season, Johnson was cut and signed by the Lions. He was unable to make the Lions 53 man roster, but has a strong chance to be signed by a team sooner rather than later.

Jordan Matthews (WR, N/A) was a third round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. After a successful start to his career, he was traded to the Buffalo Bills, where his career somewhat stalled. After a season in Buffalo, he was signed by the New England Patriots as a free agents. He was then cut by the Patriots earlier in the offseason after getting injured, but I would be surprised if he didn’t get on with another team at some point.

Ralph Webb (RB, New England Patriots) completely dominated the 2018 NFL Preseason after being signed as an undrafted free agent to the Patriots. Webb seemed to have a legitimate chance to make the 53 man roster, but ended up being cut. He was quickly signed to the Patriots practice squad, however. Don’t be surprised if he gets an opportunity to play in a game at some point this season.
