Nashville, Tenn. – Drake Fellows has been named the Freshman of the Week by the Southeastern Conference for his dominating performance in Sunday’s victory over Saint Mary’s.
The right-hander was sharp in earning his team-best third win of the year, turning in a career-best eight innings in Vanderbilt’s 9-1 series-clinching victory. Fellows gave up a leadoff single to start the game that came around to score on an error and yielded a two-out single in the second but that was it. His third strikeout of the game ended the second and started a streak of 18 consecutive retired Gaels that put Fellows into the eighth inning. The streak was snapped when Connor Kaiser made an error with two outs but one batter later, a ground ball to Kaiser ended the inning.
Fellows allowed only the one unearned run on two singles with no walks and eight strikeouts. The freshman from Plainfeld, Ill. has been outstanding in his four starts this season, going 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 27 innings.
The Commodores host Western Kentucky tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at Hawkins Field on SEC Network+ before heading to Ole Miss for the weekend to open SEC play.
